Virgil Widrich

One aspect of PRISM index was to allow artists the ability to span different medias’ and/or display their passions that may go unrecognized and often times with this compilation they tended to be bizarre and entirely engaging. Virgil, who is best known as a filmmaker, creates some of the most inventive and obsessive animated short films. For these, he has been nominated for an Oscar and selected at the Cannes film festival, along with copious amounts of other film festival awards across the globe. In 2001, he made a short film called “Copy Shop,” which chronicles a man who “copies” himself via a Xerox until he fills up the entire world. The film was made with 18,000 single pages printed out on a standard laser printer and then filmed with a 35 mm camera. Even more jaw dropping, is his film collage utilizing characters and background from 300 different Hollywood films and using 65,000 photocopies of just those to make a 14-minute chase entitled, “Fast Film.”

For PRISM index #1, Virgil took 239 pictures of different breakfast tables from all over the world and we compiled them into two eye-popping pages.
