Lisa Hanawalt

Lisa’s draws and paints pictures. Pictures that I find hard to classify. Her images mostly fall into the category of hip dressing animals that wear knit sweaters, nice slacks, and stand upright. The images are incredibly intricate, while the characters that inhabit the pictures appear very relaxed or comfortable. You can find a bunch of artwork and zines at her site including the Ignatz award winning mini-comic Stay Away From Other People.

Memo:

I should warn you that I call this "my favorite true story that isn't really a very good story." My brother and I were driving to go see a Kurosawa movie at the Nuart Theatre in West L.A., and we were just about to park when I screamed, "SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM," as if I were possessed. This was followed by a brief discussion of how crappy/spicy/regrettable Slim Jims are as a snack food. We finished parallel parking next to a large tree, and when I stepped out of the car I was faced with a lost dog poster nailed to the trunk. The name of the dog? "SLIM JIM."

I think that poster was cursed: my life has since become a horrible cycle of telling this story and being disappointed by the lukewarm response.
