Memo:

Lately I've been thinking about collections of short stories that actually have the word "stories" in their title (subtitles, and "Collected/Selected Stories of ____" don't count). So far, I've found four. These are, Stories up to a Point, by Bette Pesetsky; Stories in Another Language, by Yannick Murphy; Stories in an Almost Classical Mode by Harold Brodkey; and Stories in the Worst Way, by Gary Lutz. Gordon Lish edited all of these fine volumes, and published them at Knopf. They're in a proud little cluster on my bookshelf, alpha-by-last-name be damned. The Brodkey is bigger than the other three put together. My friend Kim says it hurts her wrists when she reads it. I wouldn't doubt this for a second.
