Jay Duplass
Jay Duplass is an artist of innumerable talents, despite what he may say. Most of his energy is directed towards his tragically underappreciated low-budget films, which he makes alongside his brother, Mark. These include the recent features, The Puffy Chair and Baghead, preceded by various short films, which highlighted their naturalistic and tragic comedic styles. Their films have done very well at festivals and garnered strong praise from the critics. Jay was kind enough to write a piece for PRISM index that, to his bemusement, we felt encapsulated the problems with art vs. business, creativity vs. sustainability, happiness vs. health, and other very serious problems, and did so hilariously.
This coming summer, Jay and his brother Mark will release their newest awkward opus, “Cyrus.” It is quite the star-studded film with John C. Reilly, Catherine Keener, Marisa Tomei, and Jonah Hill. It focuses on a recently divorced John C. Reilly, who is falling head first into desperate loneliness, when he meets the girl of his dreams (Tomei). Everything is going perfect, but he is constantly befuddled to why this woman is seeing him, until he meets her 21 year old son (Hill). The film spirals into a weird idiyosncratic battle for each others love, yet results in an honest and human portrait of each, maintaining what is unique and refreshing about the Duplass brothers.
