It’s funny/sad how often bands can blip into existence, maybe record (if they’re/we’re lucky) and then disappear without only a few ever knowing. On the other side of the coin, hopefully they go on to different things, spread their wings and create more beautiful things. Fantastic Magic is definitely one of those bands. Their first show was on March 2007 at the Rosary Room and their last on September 28, 2008 at the Che Cafe. They released “Witch Choir” in tape and CDR format on Abandon Ship Records and then "Sea of Gold"/"Jam and Yima" 7 in. on What Delicate Recordings. The music they made was dreamy, tropical psych-folk with Nathan playing electric guitar, mandolin, and singing in a falsetto. Matthew played a nylon-string guitar and warbled. Sundar played a variety of percussion and wind instruments and provided backing vocals, while Andrew provided soundscapes and extra percussion. The band blew me away. Please try to find their recordings. The song “Jam & Yima” is so catchy it will make your brain melt from overplaying.
Nathan is now the very badass band WAVVES
Matthew and Sundar have a new band called Heavy Hawaii
For PRISM index #1 CD, there is an unreleased raga jam song called “Flying On A Skateboard.” In the print section, Matt Barajas provides 3 of his very weird, esoteric and hilarious comic strips.
